Chris Bell, Julian Charter Schools

Chris Bell is the technology coordinator and lead technology teacher for Julian Charter School, a K-12 independent study program based in San Diego County. Additionally, he is a consultant for online learning and an edtech professional development trainer for the Orange County Department of Education. Bell is a Google-Certified Teacher, Google Apps EDU-Certified Trainer, a Lead Learner for the CUEtoYOU Speakers Bureau, Orange County CUE Board Member and co-chair of the CUE/iNACOL e-Learning SIG (eLSIG). Bell is also a founding member of EdTechTeam, a global network of educational technologists providing professional development and consulting services to schools and non- profit organizations.

Dr. Cathy Cavanaugh, University of Florida

Dr. Cathy Cavanaugh is an associate professor of educational technology in the School of Teaching and Learning at the University of Florida, where she teaches instructional design and distance education. Her experience includes teaching grades 6-9 science in St. Croix, Orlando, and Naples; as well as the University of North Florida, University of South Florida, Florida Gulf Coast University, and Furman University. Her funded research includes studies of classroom technology and professional development in Florida schools, effective practices in virtual schools, online professional development and design of learning environments. For this work, Dr. Cavanaugh received the iNACOL award for important research in K-12 online learning in 2009 and a Fulbright award to study in Nepal in 2011. She has published numerous books, chapters, articles, papers and reports on K-12 online and blended education since 2000.

Dr. David Haglund, Riverside Unified School District

Dr. David Haglund is the director of educational options for the Riverside Unified School District. He oversees five school programs that provide non- traditional learning opportunities to students in grades K-12. Dr. Haglund has invested 23 years in the public school setting, teaching in middle school, high school and alternative education settings. Dr. Haglund’s administrative experience began in 2003 as an instructional technology specialist within the Education Services Division of RUSD. He has presented numerous workshops and participated on expert panels at national and international conferences relating to the effective integration of technology into the core instructional program of schools. Dr. Haglund is actively engaged in the professional community that is concerned with the impact technology has on today’s learners, serving in an advisory capacity to national and international business and educational entities. In 2007, Dr. Haglund was charged with establishing a comprehensive online school program (Riverside Virtual School) that would be accessible to students in the Riverside community and beyond. Dr. Haglund’s strong ties to state, national and international organizations ensured that RUSD’s efforts met with the support necessary to propel the program into a position of leadership within the growing eLearning community. Dr. Haglund graduated from Pacific Christian College in 1985, received a master’s in arts from Trinity College, a master’s in science from California Baptist University and a doctorate in education from the University of Southern California.

Dr. Lisa Dawley, Boise State University

Dr. Lisa Dawley is a professor and the chair of the Department of Educational Technology at Boise State University. With over 20 years of experience in teacher education research, practice and policy, Dr. Dawley provides innovative leadership in the design and pedagogy of virtual environments for teaching and learning. She is co-author of the Going Virtual! research series, studying professional development for K-12 online teachers. Dr. Dawley received a Top 20 Bestselling Books Award for her text, The Tools for Successful Online Teaching. She co-founded EDTECH Island, a virtual world resource supporting international teacher education. Dr. Dawley is the Chair-elect of the Applied Research in Virtual Environments for Learning Special Interest Group (ARVEL SIG), affiliated with the American Educational Research Association (AERA), as well as the Mobile Learning Special Interest Group, affiliated with the Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education. She was an invited research fellow at Stanford’s Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences summer institute and recipient of grants from the U.S. Department of Education and the Spencer Foundation. Dr. Dawley is a former member of the Board of Directors for the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL). She received the Distinguished Research Award from the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) and the Presidential Service Award from the Association of Educational Communications & Technology (AECT).

Jeff Brazil, Digital Media and Learning Research Hub

Jeff Brazil is a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist, writer and editor who is part of a MacArthur Foundation-funded research effort at the University of California’s system-wide Humanities Research Institute, that is analyzing the impact of the Internet and digital media on learning, participatory politices and youth culture. A former enterprise writer and editor for the Los Angeles Times, he directs editorial, digital media, interactive media and strategic content development for the Digital Media and Learning Research Hub. Brazil has worked in the public and private sectors, including work in education, media, environmental non-profits, technology and science and investigative journalism.
